… och det är mindre än en boks, närmare bestämt en sjundedel.

Jag tycker att hela historien bara är sorglig. Hur man verkställer hatet mot muslimer på det mest medeltida sättet. Att bränna böcker på bål gjorde man liksom på medeltiden. […] Och när den här symboliska hatgesten kommer, ”nu bränner vi Koranen”, det blir liksom startpunken för [de afghanska muslimernas] missnöje.

Så uttrycker sig Omar Mustafa, ordförande för Muslimska Brödraskapets svenska falang, Islamiska förbundet, tillika professionell förvillare och människovärdesrelativist. Eller hur förklarar du att han ursäktar och likställer slakten av sju FN-anställda i Afghanistan med att en galen amerikan, Terry Jones, brände en kopia av Koranen?

I Sam Harris nystartade blogg (äntligen!) påminner han oss om vad han försökt belysa ända sedan The End of Faith:

Muslims appear to be far more concerned about perceived slights to their religion than about the atrocities committed daily in its name. Our accommodation of this psychopathic skewing of priorities has, more and more, taken the form of craven and blinkered acquiescence. There is an uncanny irony here that many have noticed. The position of the Muslim community in the face of all provocations seems to be: Islam is a religion of peace, and if you say that it isn’t, we will kill you. Of course, the truth is often more nuanced, but this is about as nuanced as it ever gets: Islam is a religion of peace, and if you say that it isn’t, we peaceful Muslims cannot be held responsible for what our less peaceful brothers and sisters do. When they burn your embassies or kidnap and slaughter your journalists, know that we will hold you primarily responsible and will spend the bulk of our energies criticizing you for “racism” and “Islamophobia.”

Någon som tar en helt annan position är FN:s chefssändebud i Afghanistan.

The UN’s chief envoy to Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, blamed Friday’s violence in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif on the Florida pastor who burnt the Koran on 20 March. ”I don’t think we should be blaming any Afghan,” Mr de Mistura said. ”We should be blaming the person who produced the news – the one who burned the Koran. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from offending culture, religion, traditions.”

Omar Mustafa kan således glädja sig åt medhåll från högsta håll. Det är okej att mörda så länge du känner dig kränkt nog av den materiella förlusten av någon annans exemplar av den enda bok du tillåtits fästa dig vid.

Det kan inte bara vara jag som blir mörkrädd av denna människosyn (Mattias Gardell är ursäktad). Och det är det lyckligtvis inte. I bloggen Pharyngula hittar vi en av de starkaste artiklarna som någonsin skrivits av en av de mäktigaste rösterna i bloggosfären, PZ Myers.

Genom att påminna oss om tragedin som följer med varje mord, dråp eller krigsoffer, tillför han det perspektiv som de flesta av oss försöker blunda för.

These twelve people were human beings, reduced to a statistic in a newspaper article, and dehumanized and exterminated by a mindless mob, inflamed by religious fanatics. Similarly, the hundred thousand or more killed in Iraq, the ongoing war in Afghanistan, all of these are also genuine, thinking, feeling human beings, wiped out in a cold-hearted calculus of delusion and greed. There is no justification sufficient for these acts.

Yet somehow we get lost in the wrong questions. Do we have the right to burn the Koran? Is it unreasonable to think that Afghans might have cause to be angry? Should we not defend the right of fascist politicians to live, and perhaps it is OK to grant a limited license to murder to certain people if they are of the correct political stripe or the appropriate faith? Shall we weigh the sins of a Florida preacher against those of three Afghan clerics, and come up with a number that will tell us which is the greater offender, and by how much?

Är det inte lustigt? Myers beskrivs ofta, av sina meningsmotståndare, som en ”militant ateist”. Konsten att urholka ord kanske följer med konsten att nedgradera människors värde?

I’m an extremist in this debate, I will freely confess. I hold an absolute view that no killing is ever justified, that individuals have the necessity to defend themselves against assailants, but that even that does not grant moral approval to snuffing out the life of another. Don’t even try to pull out a scale and toss a copy of the Koran on one side and the life of a single human being on the other — the comparison is obscene. Do not try to tell me that some people are ‘moderates’ when they tolerate or even support and applaud war and death and murder for any cause, whether it is oil, or getting even, or defending the honor of wood pulp and ink.
